Cross River Government Frowns At Police Officer’s Recklessness On 23-Year-Old Death

By Sylvia Akpan, Government House Correspondent

Following a tragic incident which resulted in the loss of a 23-year-old Onyekachi Moses, male, by a reckless Police Officer in Calabar, the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Otu, has condemned act.

Governor Otu made the condemnation in a press release issued on Friday August 29, 2025, by the state Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, also called for justice for the deceased.

The government while describing the incident as “tragic” said it occurred on August 1, 2025, in which Onyekachi Moses, lost his life, after some days in the Hospital following injuries sustained from the reckless actions of a Police Officer in Calabar.

The Governor has directed the Commissioner of Police to effect the immediate arrest and thorough investigation of the said officer in the grievous misconduct.

He noted that impunity has no “sanctuary” in his administration and as such views the tragic incident not only as a violation of human dignity but also as an affront to the principles of justice, security, and order his government swore to uphold.

He averred that those entrusted with protecting lives cannot become purveyors of fear and tragedy, warning that any officer who betrays this sacred duty will be made to face the full weight of the law.

The governor sympathised and prayed for the bereaved family, assuring them of his support while seeking justice that will not be delayed nor denied.

He urged citizens to remain calm, peaceful, and confident in his collective resolve to seek truth and enforce justice.

Otu appealed that the government will not rest until the memory of the departed is honored with transparency and accountability.
