The Cross River State Government has presented N500, 000 cash to the family of Corporal Actor Ismaila, military personnel, who died while carrying out the state assignment.
Ismaila, who was attached to the state’s Quick Intervention Squad, died on October 11, 2012 while on shoot out with hoodlums in the Calabar South area of the metropolis.
Presenting the cash gift to the family of the deceased soldier represented by his sister, Mrs. Helen Ismaila, the State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, said government was touched by the death of the military personnel who put in his best to fight criminal elements in the state.
According to Bassey, the state government was devastated because Ismaila’s death was the first to be recorded since the setting up of the joint security outfit in April 2012.
He said, “We are devastated because it was the first experience we had. We are aware that he was a gallant soldier and it was unfortunate things turned out this way. We know this development might have brought some pains to the bereaved family; no amount of compensation can equate his life.
“I condole with your family on behalf of Governor Liyel Imoke. We hope that the N500, 000 will help to assuage the difficulty you went through as a result of his death.”
Bassey further said that government was working out modalities for the Quick Intervention Squad security personnel to execute their job with less risk.
Receiving the money, sister of the deceased, who resides in Kano, said the family initially found it difficult to believe that their son was dead.
She commended the Cross River State Government for the gesture, stressing that the money would be used to cater for the wife and the expected child.
