Cross River State Government House sources have reliably informed crossriverwatch that the State Governor who arrived Calabar last night will be at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar to watch the friendly match between the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria and the Botswana Under 17 national team.
The Botswana U-17 team arrived Nigeria yesterday for the two-match friendly scheduled between the two teams on March 2 and 4, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Today’s match is billed to commence by 4pm Nigerian time and our source say “The governor arrived healthier than he even left the country. I was with him last night and he is upbeat. I think everybody will see him later today at the stadium where he will be watching the match between the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria and the Botswana Under 17 team”.
The matches were organized to prepare the Nigerian boys for the final phase of the African U-17 Championship taking place in Morocco between April 13 and 17.
Coach Manu Garba’s boys have remained unbeaten in 20 friendly and competitive matches since coming on stream last year.
The Golden Eaglets also swept into the African U-17 finals after winning all six qualifying matches, scoring 21 goals and conceding only one.
In contrast, Botswana’s cadets only squeezed past Malawi, Rwanda and Algeria to reach the eight-nation finals.
The Eaglets played a similar two-leg friendly against the Rwandan U-17 team, also in Calabar, both of which they won comfortably.
The Eaglets have been scheduled to leave the country for Qatar on March 13, for a four-week final preparatory program ahead of the tournament.
Nigeria will take on Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and first timer, Congo Brazzaville, in Group B of the African U-17 Championship in Morocco.
