The Cross River Government has won $1 million prize instituted by Bill Gates Foundation for polio Immunization in Africa, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs Peter Ojie has said.
Ojie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar that the state emerged the best in polio immunization in the South South geo-political zone.
“We have the most robust primary healthcare system in Nigeria he said.
He said the prize qualified the state for $1 million grant with $500,000 as its counterpart funding under the twin track initiative of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on healthcare.
He stated that the Ministry of Works was in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Community Health Department to ensure smooth primary healthcare administration at the community level.
“We have successfully ensured that the primary healthcare system is properly and robustly funded and implemented in a manner that has brought healthcare quite close to our people, ‘’ he said.
Ojie said that each of the 18 LGAs in the state had one functional primary healthcare, adding that the state was also determined to achieve one of the MDGs targets on healthcare by 2015.(NAN)
