Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke has officially flagged –off the construction of the first multi-million Naira flyover in Calabar.
Speaking at the launching of the beams for the project, Imoke disclosed that the flyover will add to the aesthetics of the city which has recently witnessed significant growth while serving as an interchange to the newly constructed six kilometers dual carriage Margaret Ekpo Int’l Airport bypass and Parliamentary extension road network.
He opined that the project, which holds tremendous economic value to the state, is a deliberate effort by government to upgrade as well as provide the desired infrastructure especially along the new Airport bypass to meet the phenomenal growth of the area.
While commending the construction firm, Sermatech, for exhibiting professional competence in executing the project and for remaining focused despite the challenging swampy terrain, Imoke however, urged them to fast track the project to meet its deadline.
Commissioner for Works, Mr. Legor Idagbo, stated that the project was conceived to de-congest traffic in the city center as well as open up the eastern flank of Calabar for residential and other developmental purposes.
He added that the flyover will reduce drastically driving distance to and from the Margaret Ekpo Int’l Airport for those living in the outskirts of Calabar and visitors to the state.
Managing Director, Sermatech Construction Company, Mr. Isioma, said the company has deployed its best hands alongside expatriates in ensuring that the project is executed according to specification and on schedule.
The Governor later inspected the 18 hole Golf Course sited along the new development area in Calabar, where he disclosed that the project was another step in the right direction to add to the tourism offerings in the state as part of efforts to retain its status as the preferred destination for business and leisure in sub Saharan Africa.
While expressing satisfaction with the level of work done so far, Imoke maintained that the golf course, which is of international standard, will afford professional golfers in the country the opportunity to practice on world standard golf course to enhance their competence at the international arena.
Imoke who described the project as holistic, reaffirmed his administration’s readiness and commitment to complete all ongoing projects, stressing that adequate financing, engineering and management mechanism have been put in place to ensure comprehensive completion of projects embarked by government but however, pointed out that the state will not hesitate to put-on-hold any project it will not be able to deliver before the expiration of his tenure.
