Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Chairman of the University of Calabar Governing Council yesterday disclosed that the institution will need the sum of N3 billion to host the African Universities Games as well as the Pan-African University Debate scheduled for next year in the institution.

Dr. Iwuayanwu also re-affirmed that the university will next session commence studies in Pharmacy and Engineering courses stating that the decision was part of the resolutions of the University’s Governing Board.

He said the new courses were necessary to raise the status of the university as a first rate university in the country adding that the development was considered based on the role Calabar has played in national development.

He said the University will continue to be given the priority attention it deserves in terms of infrastructure and enhancement of academic performance to enable it stand out amongst others in the country and beyond.

While fielding questions from newsmen on the current political situation in the country, Iwuanyanwu said he believes strongly in zoning of political offices “in line with the principle of national character’’.

On the current face-off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU] and the Federal Government, Dr. Iwanyanwu said the situation only calls for understanding and regretted that the MOU signed by the Olusegun Obasanjo government since 2009 was reneged on.

He disclosed that the UNICAL branch of the union has been charged to convince their colleagues at the center on the need to re-open talks with the federal government to reach a common ground on the union’s demands.
