Relief materials worth millions of Naira have been distributed to victims of the May 18, 2013 windstorm disaster which swept across some Northern and Central Senatorial Districts of Cross River State.
According to the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, over 4 thousand residential buildings and public infrastructure were damaged displacing about 9,000 persons.
Beneficiaries were overwhelmed with joy as officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) arrived Etung, Obudu and Ogoja LGAs with relief materials which included zinc, wood and cement for distribution.
The beneficiaries who were given materials based on the type and severity of the damage to their property said that the gesture has given them a sense of belonging.
Some of them who spoke with our correspondent said that the Imoke administration was highly sensitive to the plight of the less privileged describing him as God sent.
They commended the dexterity of the State Emergency Management Agency for its commitment and focus in disaster management and intervention and called for sustenance.
Speaking at the Ogoja distribution center the Council Chairman, Ebi Makpa described the consistency with which the State Governor had been disposed to responding to disasters in the Local Government Area as highly commendable.
He used the opportunity to appeal to the Governor to consider the plight of the victims of the 2012 windstorm disaster which affected about 3,000 houses killing 4 persons pointing out that over 6,000 persons displaced were still suffering.
Presenting the materials for distribution, the Director-General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Mr. Vincent Aquah said that the relief was a display of the sensitivity of Governor Imoke to the plight of victims of the windstorm disaster.
Mr. Aquah who was represented by the Head of Relief and rehabilitation unit in the Agency Mr. Andy Akpotu urged the beneficiaries to use the materials judiciously.
