The annual Mary Slessor Charity Golf Tournament has started at the Calabar Golf Club, with a tee-off by governor Liyel Imoke and his wife, Obioma.
The tee-off which was part of the annual Calabar Christmas Festival also witnessed the presence of the creme-de-la-creme of professional golf in the country attempting to beat the Course and outwit peers in the tourney for the winning price of N5m.
The tourney, which debuted in 2008, has become one of the activities marking the high point of Calabar Festival . It is used to raise funds to support the activities of Mrs. Obioma Liyel Imoke’s pet projects -Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realization (POWER), and Mothers Against Child Abandonment.
While explaining the impact of the competition to the governor, Mr. Igbe Aruko, Captain of the Club along with the Chairman of Association of Professional Golfers said that the Mary Slessor golf tourney in Calabar has contributed its quota to grassroots development of the sport in Cross River in particular and the country in general.
