Calabar has been described as one of the cleanest and peaceful cities in Nigeria by Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The President stated this during the 27th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar, UNICAL held yesterday, Saturday 22nd February, 2014 at Abraham Odia stadium within the institution.
Dr. Jonathan said he is glad to take part in the celebration noting that since 1975, UNICAL has produced notable individuals in diverse spheres who have made significant contribution in national development.
President Jonathan represented by the Minister of Education Mr. Wike Nyesom explained that “Universities serve as engine room for development as a repository of knowledge”.
He commended the management of the University for what he describe as an institution centered on the total empowerment of the youths through its vast academic programmes, disclosing that his administration has built over 290 Almajiri schools in some parts of the country. He however advised the convocating students to put into full practice the knowledge received over the years for the betterment of Nigerians.
Also speaking, the Chairman Governing Council of the institution, Dr. Emmanuel. C. Iwuanyanwu commended the graduating students saying, “The various qualification you are been conferred with today shows that UNICAL has thoroughly prepared you for the challenges you will face in time to come because now you are on your own”.
He urged them to emulate the great alumni’s of the school and carve a niche for themselves as major contributors to national development.
The Governing Council Chairman disclosed that the Alma metar has signed a memorandum of understanding, MOU with the University of Miami and the Miami Transplant Institute both of the United States of America, USA for improved health care academic programs.
On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. James Ekpoke revealed that the convocating students are 15,037 in number.
Also that “Recently the department of Orthopaedic Surgery successfully carried out its first knee replacement surgery within our environment in collaboration with Cocharis”, Epoke said.
The VC admonished the graduants not to in any way indict the school for negative reasons but should be touch bearers who will attract more students.
