Apparently allaying fears of some of his loyalists over the seeming turbulence that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Cross River State is experiencing over the 2015 governorship election, Governor Liyel Imoke has assured the leaders and members of his party that “they are some people saying there will be betrayals, is that not part of our politics? Tell them that we are not afraid of betrayal”
Speaking during the second year anniversary and thanksgiving get together of the PDP executives at Peregrino Hall, Imoke said even in the seemingly provocative and challenging period the party will be working through, ‘I have absolute confidence in the leadership of the party.’
He charged the party hierarchy to be steadfast and avoid inducement borne out of some individual selfish interest which is at the expense of the party’s collective decision.
The governor assured the Chairman and other executive members of the party of his readiness to ‘pay the prize’ occasioned by the comment of the chairman barring members from political activities, as long as it is in the right direction and in the collective interest of the party.
“I believe that different people are going to talk from now in different ways, isn’t that part of our politics? Have they succeeded in the past?
Many people have come to me to say some people will betray me as if betrayal is not part of our politics, are we afraid of betrayal?
The governor then proceeded debar members of the party who have political ambitions from the earlier directive and gave them the green light to begin consultations ‘within the family”.
He said: “I want to tell those who want to express their interest within the political family to continue to do in line with the family decision because we are expected to do so as a democratic organization.
“Those who are doing so outside the family arrangement too are doing and how that will translate to victory at the poll is what we will all see.
“I have absolute confidence in this executive, even when a lot of people did not give them chance, I believed them and commend the Chairman and will stand by him as he continues to make pronouncements as long as that pronouncement is right, I don’t mind to pay the prize because I know that this is the era of pronouncements, so Mr Chairman I’m by you.
“When he called a press conference that I don’t know anything about, people started saying it was Imoke who asked him to do the conference, whereas the Chairman informed me about the briefing after he had made the pronouncement.
“But as long as that pronouncement is in the collective interest of the party and it is right, I will continue to stand by you and pay the prize.” He said.
