Finally, the All Progressive Congress, APC, constituted its state executive in Cross River State even as a faction of the party led by Mr. Ramsey Ebam has protested its alleged exclusion by instituting a court action seeking to nullify the election.
A rescheduled congress which took place at the Tinapa Conference Hall saw delegates electing Mr Usani Usani as the State Chairman of the party in keeping with the terms of a meeting held in Port Harcourt two weeks ago with Mr Rotimi Amaechi, the Rivers State governor, who is also said to be the leader of the party in the South South, where a consensus was reached for the emergence of a neutral person as the chairman of the Party following the fractious outcome of the first congress.
Mr Victor Ebong emerged as the Secretary of the party while Mr Cletus Obun, the one time chairman of ACN was elected the Vice Chairman Central and Victor Okon Vice Chairman South.
Other executive members include John Ochala, Deputy Chairman and Menz Ikpeme, Publicity Secretary.
Mr Usani Usani, the elected chairman declined interview with CrossRiverWatch at the venue of the congress yesterday saying he was not disposed to talking but a chairmanship aspirant, Mr Ramsey Ebam said he has instituted a court action to nullify the election for excluding him from the process for which he said he would have won if allowed to be free and fair.
He told CrossRiverWatch that “We went to Port Harcourt to meet with Amaechi and he said Usani should be accepted as the consensus chairman but I explained that Usani did not participate in the first exercise he should at best be co-opted to contest alongside the rest of us who contested during the first congress but Amaechi would not allow that, rather he said I should shut up after all what is Cross River State with a meager 3 billion naira allocation which is just an equivalent of what a local government in Rivers State gets”.
Mr Ramsey said he has asked the court to nullify the election and order for another election which will give all the aspirants a free and fair platform to contest for whatever position they want in the party.
CrossRiverWatch gathered that, Usani Usani was introduced to Governor Amaechi by the incumbent Commissioner for Information in Governor Imoke’s government who is a friend to Governor Amaechi.
Usani Usani was not a Chairmanship candidate in the Congress that took place on 8th of May, 2014. The NEC of APC cancelled the Congress held and ordered a fresh one for yesterday.
Ordinarily the Congress scheduled for yesterday was supposed to be for those who had participated in the one of 8th May, 2014 but the intervention of Governor Amaechi changed all that and excluded some of the strong contenders to pave way for a preferred candidate but some members of the Party have vowed to resist Governor Amaechi’s plan by organizing a parallel congress.
