All is set for the commencement of the 4th edition of Cross River State All Athletic Federation Annual Championship in Calabar, with a special task to raise a Team that will represent Nigeria in the Glasgow Commonwealth games late in the year.
President, Athletic Federation of Nigeria, Solomon Ogba, stated this during a media briefing with newsmen in Calabar.
Ogba said already 40 athletes from outside the country have joined their home based counterparts to fight for a place in the commonwealth team and later Africa Senior Championship later in 2014.
He assured that Nigeria will defend its African championship title in Morocco later in the year stressing that the effort will start from Calabar.
On his part, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Patrick Ugbe affirmed that the partnership between the state and federal athletics federations has brought dividends to the state and Nigeria and assured that it will continue as the new administration will see the need for its continuity.
He said governor Imoke had last year promised to deliver a brand new track for the athletes in the 2014 edition, and announced that the track is ready for use.
While urging for the continuity of the program, former Olympic gold medallist, Falilat Ogunkoya said continuity will produce better results for the comprehensive sport development program of the state.
