The combined efforts of the obudu Local Government Youth Council, the local vigilante, the Nigeria police and the family of the deceased has led to the arrest of a major suspect in last Sunday’s killing of a nineteen year old final year student of Renaissance University, Esther Elilo Ukwayi, in Obudu.
Esther was shot beneath the ear by an unidentified gun man who rode on a bike on Sunday night in front of her father’s compound and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu.
The Security Adviser of Obudu Local Government, Mr. Spokesman Agogo told CrossRiverWatch today that the suspect was arrested last night and is presently in detention at the police station in Obudu.
He assured that the government and the Police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that other accomplices in the gruesome killing are also arrested.
“We don’t have to discuss security matters with the press all the time. It will affect our investigation in so many ways. But I want to assure you that this was not an indiscriminate arrest. It was a calculated arrest informed by reliable intelligence and the suspect has been cooperating with the police.
“He has other accomplices and we are working round the clock to see how those accomplices are brought under police net. I want to assure the public that this is the first of this kind of crime since we took office and we will do everything within our capacity to unravel the people behind this and bring them to justice.
“We also expect that the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID will take over the matter from the Obudu division within the next 48 hours. The tradition here in the past when these kind of things happen is the tendency to politicize the matter and pressurize the police to grant the suspect bail in Obudu but we want this to get to Calabar as quickly as possible to forestall that.
“We are determined to unravel this and put an end to the trend and we will surely do it.” He concluded.
