The joy of every community is to grow from height to height. That seems not to be the case in UNICAL. The University of Calabar is one of the biggest universities in Nigeria. A university once ranked 6th in ICT in Nigeria.
With all the infrastructural development and digitalizing in the University, the method of faeces disposal from the university sucker well is nothing to write home about.
Following the over flow of the sucker well in the male hostel for the past two weeks, amidst cries from the students who are preparing for their exams that the stench was not allowing to them to read in their hostels, the school management responded yesterday by hiring one old man to evacuate the waste from the sucker well manually.
Unthinkably, this was done in the morning hours while students were busy preparing to go to school thereby flooding the hostel surroundings with traces of faeces and making the environment uncomfortable for students.
Some of the students expressed disgust with the development and called it an inhuman act. Those who spoke to our correspondent on campus bemoaned the action of the authorities and their general attitude towards sanitation in the school hostels.
A 300 level student of Marketing, who identified himself as Daniel said it was regrettable that the school management will pay the students back with disease infested hostels despite the huge sum paid for hostel accommodation just recently.
Another student from the Faculty of Science who spoke in anonymity tagged the act as, “abomination for flooding the hostel with shit as if students were dogs to be leaving with faeces. Rather than the university management getting a commercial tanker to suck out the faeces without flooding the hostels, they went ahead to bring an old man to desecrate the environment regardless of high fees the school charged this session”.
Many of the students also associated the development to what they called the comatose state of the Students Union Government, SUG since the abortion of the election last month.
