All appears to be set for the Senator representing Cross River Southern Senatorial District, Senator Bassey Otu to dump the ruling PDP and cross over to Labour Party.

Speculations have been rife about his possible departure from the ruling party after losing the party senatorial ticket to governor Imoke’s long time friend, Gershom Bassey in a contentious primary that generated plenty of tension and protests.

In a chat with CrossRiverWatch today, the Cross River State Chairman of Labour Party, Mr. Austin Ibok said all is now set to give the Senator and others who will be joining him to decamp from PDP a befitting welcome into the fold of Labour Party.

“Otu’s movement to Labour Party has been decided; himself along with other persons like Alex Egbona will be moving into our party on Wednesday and we are planning to make it a very big occasion for them. Jedy’s own too has been decided but we are meeting later today with his people to conclude on certain things.” He said.

CrossRiverWatch attempt to speak with Senator Otu on the development was not successful as several calls to his phone were not taken.

Prince Jedy Agba also confirmed to CrossRiverWatch that he is in discussions with Labour Party but was not ready to give further details yet.

Party loyalty and loyalty to the state and one’s principles separates a politician who is in politics to serve selfish interests and one “called” to serve the common interests.

In this regard, a party is only a platform from which a politician operates. Following this logic, a politician who decamps from a party that no longer serves the common good or one that is rife with irregularities should be applauded and supported as the state loyalty should supersede party loyalty. If the Labour Party provides the right platform for PDP members who have been mistreated and frustrated by their erstwhile party bosses, so be it.

Party arrogance breeds group think which stifles innovative ideas that serve the common good. Voters should vote for the candidate that holds greater promise of serving the state rather than one that a party has imposed to perpetuate itself in power.
