The immediate past Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Cross River State, Mr Mike Igini, on Tuesday rose to the occasion to defend his successor, Mr. Okey Ezeani who the opposition APC had accused of being a card carrying member of the ruling PDP.
Igini made the defense in Calabar during the commissioning of the multi-purpose INEC conference hall and send-off ceremony for him.
He urged the staff not to compromise or surrender the commission’s values to the whims and caprices of politicians but rather show courage of conviction and desist from allowing themselves to be used a tools for manipulation.
“Strive and show the electorate that you can afford to restore the pride of the nation`s electoral institution by proving to the people that you are a credible electoral umpire.”
Speaking in defense of his successor who the opposition has tagged a PDP member, Igini who has been redeployed to Edo State expressed happiness for handing over to Ezeani whom he described as capable of conducting elections in the state, “Few days back when I heard some idle talks, I knew the accusers did not know him. I would have been sad if it was not Ezeani that took over from me. He is the most qualified in terms of value and quality. For the records, Ezeani is from Anambra State and only served as REC in Ebonyi State,”
Igini said Ezeani was recommended to work as REC in Nigeria based on his over 30 years working experience as a public servant in Washington DC, United States.
