A sociopolitical group in Cross River known as the Democratic Alliance has cautioned political rivals to desist from smear campaigns.

A press release obtained by CrossRiverWatch in Calabar and signed by the group’s coordinator, Elder Eyo Nsa, the Secretary Mr. Daniel Ekpe, youth leader Mr. Wilfred Obu, Evang. Abigail Ekpo and Honorable Charity Obo the Director and Secretary Women Affairs respectively urged rivals to “approach the election on verifiable issues, track records and achievements instead of adopting decoys”.

The group also took a swipe at comments credited to the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ntufam John Okon and the party’s Senatorial candidate, Gershom Bassey over the recent assassination attempt on the life of the latter which portrays the Labor party’s candidate Senator Bassey Otu as the culprit and blamed the incident on the style of politics played by Gershom Bassey.

The group also condemned the massive destruction of bill boards and posters of Senator Bassey Otu and called on the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Security to investigate the allegations and publish the findings.

The release read in part; “We stand to be corrected that and will at the appointed time be vindicated that all the ruse over violence which is rather strange in the body polity of the state right from the purported bomb blast at the secretariat of the state PDP on the eve of the last controversial primaries of the party are rehearsed, orchestrated and executed by insiders nay party faithfuls to perpetrate their selfish interest, divert the attention of security agencies so that they can deploy them there massively for nefarious and self seeking interest to cow the opposition and create a siege mentality among prospective voters during the election proper”

The group also maintained that “The aim is to sway sympathy and adopt further Machiavellian tactics to foist an unpopular candidate over the wish of the majority by crying wolf where there is none.

We stand to be contradicted that the recent assassination attempt on the life of the candidate in focus is as a result of his restive political jobbers and hirelings (miscreants) which he is indebted to for odd jobs performed so far because we have it on good authority and sources that the debt collectors were at his residence that fateful Saturday evening to recover their debt hence the face-off with his residential guards who allegedly obstructed them from having access to their boss”.
