The Elections Petition Tribunal for Cross River State has announced that it has so far received 13 petitions from aggrieved politicians and political parties seeking to upturn the result of the March 28 National Assembly elections as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the results announced by the INEC at the close of elections, the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the three senatorial seats and the eight House of Representatives seats in the state.
Secretary of the Tribunal, Mr. John Tsok, who made the information available to journalists on Monday in Calabar, said four petitions have been enlisted challenging the return of PDP candidates as senators-elect.
The information also indicated that nine different petitions have been filed at the Tribunal seeking to upturn the results of the eight federal constituencies which were also won by the PDP.
Prominent among the petitions are those of the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidates; Senator Bassey Otu for southern senatorial district; Mr Sandy Onor for central senatorial district and Mr. Julius Okputu for northern senatorial district.
They are challenging the election of PDP candidates; Gershom Bassey, John Eno-Owan and Dr. Rose Oko for southern, central and northern senatorial districts respectively.
Also, the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the northern senatorial district has also filed his petition against the outcome of the election in the northern senatorial district.
Aside from the petitions concerning the senatorial elections, nine petitions have been enlisted in the tribunal challenging the election of the PDP House of Representatives members-elect.
Among the petition for the House of Representatives elections is that of the LP candidate for Yakurr/Abi federal constituency, Dr. Alex Egbonna challenging the victory of Bassey Eko Ewa of the PDP , and that of the LP candidate for Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi federal constituency, Mr. Dominic Aqua Edem who is complaining against the victory of Essien Ayi of the PDP
Concerning petition for the governorship and State House of Assembly elections, the secretary said so far, no petition for elections into those offices have been received.
Tsok told journalists that tribunal judges will be in the state soon to commence hearing of the petitions.
