Following the suspension of the industrial action by lecturers/members of the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU strike a Calabar Businessman, Mr. Jessi Ejemot has called on the union members to be compassionate in dealing with the state government.
Mr. Jessi made the call while speaking with CrossRiverWatch in Calabar recently. He said, “Like we all know Cross River State government lost some part of our territory, so what was coming in before isn’t coming anymore and the state governor Senator Liyel Imoke has done his best in managing the little finance we have.
“The striking lecturers of CRUTECH should also understand with the government with what they are going through. Everybody knows we have lost our territory and 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom and all of that, the allocation has dropped nothing is coming in”.
Adding that, “You know the state government is trying to manage the little fund they have. We should consider that; we shouldn’t just come out and start asking for what is not possible, that is wrong. If I were the lecturers I will understand with the state government and see what can be done and give them a trial not just shut down school asking for what is not possible, the predicament of the state government should be considered”.
He spotted none remittance of revenue as a periling factor in the state, saying: “If the revenue collected by the government agents is remitted 100% to the state government, we won’t have all these issues, most of these issues would have been sorted out, if the government looks into it critically they can handle the challenges”.
On the way forward he advised, “The state should embark on business projects to drive revenue and generate income for the state and not to depend on the federal allocation.”
