The Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Akpabuyo,Calabar is set to commence intensive Research in Science and Engineering as part of effort to prepare it’s students to meet up with competitive international global best practices in Science Education.
Already some of the students of the school have been part of the Defence headquarters approved Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) which places academically talented high school students with interest and ability in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as apprentices in Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories for eight weeks course.
The Secondary School is one of the best in the country with the latest being the commissioning of the ultra modern Physics, Chemistry, Biology and ICT laboratory by the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval command, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola to mark the 59th year anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
The FOC who was excited about the giant strides of the school said the last visit of the Special Technical Team on Education from Naval headquarter to review the readiness of the school to meet the set target scored Nigerian Navy Secondary school Akpabuyo above board “because of its continuous investment in science education”
“We are ready to invest more in you to commence research in science education to enable you discover and invent something new as a product of this school one day, we are ready for you and the challenge is yours” He told the students.
Continuing he said, the Nigerian Navy Secondary school, Calabar is very outstanding in meeting the requirements of both the federal and Cross River State ministry of education.
The school is very outstanding in Science and ICT Education as well as Art , the school environment and quality of teachers, he said.
“The Naval Technical Education team’s comment when they visited here was very exemplary and I’m pleased with the Commandant of the School, Regina Eleazu-Uriri and pray that any one that will succeed her after the expiration of her tenure will key into her exemplary leadership because I see the school going beyond the shores of Nigeria.
“The science and laboratory equipment in the school show that the school is fulfilling its’ dream.
Speaking on the giant strides recorded by NNSS, Akpabuyo, the Commandant of the school, Commander Regina Eleazu-Uriri said the achievement was recorded due to the support of the FOC and the Naval headquarters since according to her, There are more than 25 Navy laboratories across the country currently participating in the Navy SEAP program.
She said “While working closely with research personnel, who act as mentors, our students here will experience scientific and engineering practice now available in the school environment to prepare them in the unique and positive experience of their fields of interest and encourage them to pursue future careers.”
The school in 2014 emerged as the overall best in the National Examination Council (NECO) in Cross River State.
