Security has been beefed up along the waterways linking Itu and Ibiono local government areas of Akwa Ibom State with neighbouring Odukpani local government area of Cross River State to dislodge sea pirates and miscreants from continuous attack of innocent citizens operating from the creeks joining the two sister states.

Newly posted Commissioner of Police to Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Murtala U. Mani who spoke to Thisday during an interview on Wednesday noted that due to the poor road network in the areas, the only means of transportation from Okopedi in Ibiono, Itu, and Eniong and Ito axis in Cross River state to Arochukwu in Abia state was the waterways.

Mani who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of the State Police Command, ASP Cordelia Nwawe said the deployment of more security personnel to patrol the coast of the two states was to forestall further attacked of sea travellers.

He regretted Tuesday’s invasion of the Ibiono and Itu as well as Eniong waterways by the miscreants that resulted in one person wounded by stray bullets during confrontation with security operatives.

The State Police boss said, though the hoodlums stormed the area and began sporadic shooting, the combined team of armed Policemen and Soldiers were able to counter and dispel them within short notice of being informed.
