Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Betta Edu, has advised young people against early sexual activities and lack of personal hygiene culture which could lead to preventable diseases.
She gave the admonition while speaking to a group of school children under the Peer Educators Training (PET) CDS Program organized by a corp member; Jesse Green Tina, serving at her office.
Dr. Betta Edu informed the students that early sexual activities have negative impact and encouraged them to abstain from it and avoid looming dangers such as sexually transmitted infections ( STIs), cervical cancer and teenage pregnancy.
Dr. Edu emphasised that the best way to prevent all these is to abstain from sex and focus on education.
“if you abstain from having sex, you are likely not to get any of the transmitted infections like HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, urinary tract infection, etc”
She said some of these diseases are acquired by risky behaviours where people go on and on to have sexual relationship with various people that don’t know their status.
“Carnival is here again. Young girls must protect themselves. Tourists come with all sorts, don’t be carried away.
” As young people as you grow your hormones start developing and you start observing changes in your body, voice, growing hair in the body, growing boobs, buttocks and body shape in such a way that when you walk past a man, you will get a compliment.
“Don’t be deceived by the compliments you get, be yourself and stay away from the compliments because it can lead to sexual harassment, rape, teenage unwanted pregnancy, promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases.” said Dr. Edu.
Finally she spoke on personal hygiene by advising them the students to take their bath thrice a day especially for the girls, wash their cloths and develop the habit of hand washing to save money from treatment of some preventable diseases.
She also noted that personal hygiene will prevent spread of monkey pox.
Appreciating the time spent with them, the senior girls prefect in her closing remarks thanked Dr. Edu for coming and promised the DG and Corper Tina that they will surely abide by what they learnt.
The Peer Educator training was organized by Corp Member Jesse Green-Tina in collaboration with CRSPHCDA as her last community service development awareness program on sexual education in junior and senior secondary schools across Calabar.
