Youths in Yala Local Government Area on Friday commissioned a failed portion of the northern Cross River superhighway as a protest to draw the attention of the government to their plight.
They gathered at O’ba community in Okpoma, Yala to protest the poor state of the road which has remained under construction since November 2016.
The dualization of Mfum – Okpoma – Okuku – Imaje – Abuochiche – Obudu – Obudu Mountain resort road or northern superhighway as tagged by Governor Ben Ayade spans a length of over 133.7 kilometers and is supposed to terminate at the bottom hill section of the Obudu mountain resort.
The Governor said it will be dualized to aid the evacuation of agro produce and access to tourism site.
So far, over 20 kilometers from the Obudu – Abuochiche axis has been surfaced with tar while the Mfum – Okpoma – Okuku axis where the initial flag off was done has since been abandoned.
In a video from the protest, a vehicle with a People’s Democratic Party flag is jeered at as it drives by.
