Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Chairman of the Cross River Traditional Ruler’s Council, Etinyin Etim Okon Edet has said the monarchs will change the face of politics in the State.
Etinyin Etim, who is also the Paramount Ruler of Bakassi Local Government Area said that the monarchs were changing the narrative that they have no business in politics as everyone had business in it. However, he averred that the involvement in politics was not partisan.
“We do not want politicians to tell us that we do not have anything to do with politics. We have. It is a ‘tale told by idiots, full of sound and furry, signifying nothing’. We have something to do with politics but not with partisan politics.
“We dont need to register as party men neither would we hold their cards or elective office but we would decide who becomes our next representatives and Governor so long as our people can vote. We would not seat back and allow people of low characters to lead our people. We shall show our people the direction and take control so that nobody takes us for granted,” read a statement issued to CrossRiverWatch.
He continued: “The period of paying homage or courtesy call has since past. We are ready to show the way physically and spiritually. Traditional Rulers will not be completely mute during political permutations and selection, because when a bad governments or wrong public policy emerge, we are always badly affected.
“It is time to wake up considering our numbers – 18 Paramount Rulers, 19,340 village heads, 7500 clan heads. We must encourage, force, persuade our people of voting age to go and register so we can decide who to vote for during elections. We are no more leaving politics and governance to politicians alone.”
He further quoted banking expert John Upan Odey, “there is something important we need to do as the next election cycle beckons; we need to ask ourselves what we want and find those who can help us get it not wait for what they say and limit us to the options they present”.
