There is palpable tension in the Ogoja/Yala federal constituency as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have scheduled the same community and date for the grand finale of their campaigns ahead of the February 26th, 2022, legislative by-elections.
Sources in both parties have confirmed that their grand finales are expected to hold tomorrow, Thursday, February 24th, 2022 at Okpoma in Yala Local Government Area.
Sources in both parties have told CrossRiverWatch that supporters are apprehensive given the recent activities in the State’s political scene.
While the PDP had announced that Okpoma will be it’s last port of call, the APC never really made public it’s campaign itinerary.
“We are in Yache right now, and we are doing the grand finale tomorrow at Okpoma,” a close aide to the APC’s candidate, Jude Ngaji, a native of Okpoma told this Newspaper on phone and, on condition of anonymity.
“We already made public, since February 14th, our decision to end the campaign in Okpoma tomorrow, I don’t know why they will want to do the same,” a member of the State Working Committee of the PDP told CrossRiverWatch. However, he added that; “When we return from Mbube (Ogoja) today, we will seat and plan the next action.”
The candidates of both parties hail from Yala. While Mr. Ngaji of the APC is from Okpoma, which is the political capital of the council, Mr. Usibe of the PDP hails from Ukelle which serves as the agro-commercial hub.
Recently, the rhetoric and politicking surrounding the by-election has moved up a notch, with PDP stalwarts accusing the APC led government of trying to frustrate the process by compromising the security architecture while the APC stalwarts accuse the PDP of inviting foreign elements to destabilize the peace Cross River has been enjoying.
The election is generally viewed as a “make or break” situation for both parties in the run-up to the proposed February 2023 general elections.
