Information reaching our newsroom suggests that unknown individuals dug up the armored cable which distributes power to street lights along the Kakum to Indi-Abeb section of the Bekwarra – Obudu – Wula – Ikom road.
No fewer than two dozen individuals were involved in the action with an aide to Governor Ben Ayade, Mr. Tom Adie, also known as ‘Tompolo’ supervising the action, a source told CrossRiverWatch.
“They have passed the junction where you turn to the Governor’s compound,” the source, (name withheld) said after riding past those involved in the act.
Another source fingered the Governor’s sister, Madam Kate Ayade as the mastermind behind the action.
The road, popularly referred to as “Ogoja Road,” and “Northern Superhighway,” by aides of the Governor is a dual carriageway. The construction was flagged off in November 2016 linking different communities in the five Local Government Areas of Northern Cross River State.
The Obudu section was tarred between 2019 and 2022 with a vast section of it already collapsing before completion of the project.
The street lights project is a component of the road project after the initial ones installed in 2014 and 2015 were vandalized by thugs suspected to be associated with another aide of the Governor, Mr. Christian Ukpang Odey.
