Promotion Of Local Government Staff In Cross River State And Matters Arising.

INTRODUCTION

The Nigerian public service is established by Section 169 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as altered. In a similar vein, Section 206 establishes the civil service of States in the Federation.

The Local Governments are not left out with States usually setting up Local Government Service Commissions to streamline and harmonize them in public service.

In Cross River State, civil servants employed under the Unified Local Government scheme have their affairs directed by the Local Government Service Commission of the State.

Recently, the Chairman of the Commission issued an itinerary for promotion interviews which began on Thursday and is expected to last until Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

The itinerary was released days after the Trade Union Congress said the Cross River State Government has not promoted anyone in the past seven years and owes gratuities for the past 10 years.

Questions such as why now? And, is this the right way to go? have been asked.

Also, what stalled promotions?

Were ALGON and NULGE carried along?

Which staff are actually affected?

How soon can this be implemented?

Are there provisions for this in the budget?

These and more form the basis of this week’s ‘The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo’ with the topic; “Promotion Of Local Government Staff In Cross River State And Matters Arising.”
