The 6th Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), who is the current Emir of Kano. HH, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Sarkin Kano has charged the graduating students of the institution to be good ambassadors and remember their roots.
The Chancellor shortly after declaring the convocation open for the seven thousand, seven hundred and sixty-nine (7,769) graduates with various degrees in the institution.
He said UNICAL has been known to have produced distinguished students who have excelled in their various disciplines, declaring that “knowledge acquired must be transmitted or it dies.”
He urged them to “go forth and make us proud as you are the ambassadors of the university.”
The Royal Father disclosed that his mission and vision as the Chancellor of the University is to make the institution the best in the sub-Saharan region and one to be reckoned with in the world.
In her speech, the Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Prof. Florence Obi thanked and welcomed the students and guests, as she echoed the words of the Chancellor “to be good ambassadors of the institution in character and in learning.”
She said her vision as the VC since her emergence as the University boss is to make the school the best to be reckoned with and to clear some bottlenecks that have been bedeviling the citadel of learning; digitalize the school in terms of lectures, exams, and results; fight corruption among others.
She said electricity generation, upgrade of Senate chambers, standard Library, beds spaces in the hostels, and security issues as a result of the waterfront surrounding the school among other challenges plaguing the institution which houses over 36,000 students is a major concern.
The high points of the ceremony were the presentation of prizes to the best-graduating students in various departments and faculties.
