The Association of Cross River Online Journalists (ACROJ) in the State has acknowledged the challenges Journalists face in the course of performing their duty as stipulated in section 22 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).
ACROJ in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Edem Darlington to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day said despite challenges, Journalists should not be deterred but rather, with more zeal and dedication.
He said the Association will support and continue to advocate for the rights of its members, adding that: “Your work as online journalists is instrumental in shaping a future of rights where all people have access to accurate information and where human rights are respected and upheld.”
The press statement reads in parts: “As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2023, I want to acknowledge the tremendous contributions that you make in shaping a future of rights and upholding the principles of freedom of expression. This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights,” highlights the essential role that online journalists play in promoting and protecting human rights.
“I want to recognize the challenges that you have faced in the discharge of your duties as online journalists in our beloved state, especially in light of the just concluded general elections.
“The past year has been particularly difficult, with the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic which created numerous obstacles, including disinformation, harassment, and cyber-attacks as well as the general elections which were shrouded in a myriad of misinformation that threatened the peace of our state and nation.
“However, despite these challenges, you have remained committed to your work and dedication to providing accurate and reliable information.
“As the Chairman of the Association of Online Journalists, I want to express my gratitude for your unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of journalism and promoting freedom of expression.
“Your work is vital in shaping a future where all people have access to accurate information and human rights are respected and upheld.
“I want to assure you that ACROJ is here to support you, and we will continue to advocate for your rights as journalists as we recognize the importance of your work and the vital role that you play in promoting democracy and upholding the fundamental human right to freedom of expression. A role we will not allow to be downplayed by the powers that be as we strive to hold public officers accountable to their oath of office.
“Your work as online journalists is instrumental in shaping a future of rights where all people have access to accurate information and where human rights are respected and upheld.
“Once again, thank you for your exceptional work, and I urge you to continue to be a voice of truth and accuracy in a world that often tries to silence you.
Sincerely.”
