The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, (UNICAL) Professor Florence Obi on Wednesday 25th July, 2023 said the withdrawal of hundreds of students by the institution was in line with its policies and was ratified by the Varsity’s Senate.
Professor Obi made this known in an exclusive interview series on CrossRiverWatch called ‘One-on-One’.
She denied allegations that the withdrawal of admissions was targeted at the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, and insisted that those withdrawn were admitted during the 2020/2021 academic session.
Professor Obi explained that the list of withdrawn students was compiled from different departments and the action was approved by the Senate to prevent any potential legal issues or problems.
During the interview, Professor Obi also addressed other pressing issues, including the disengagement of graduate assistants, the examination timetable controversy, fee payment, late registration, infrastructure, and allegations of vindictiveness.
She also defended herself against claims that she is a wicked and vindictive person, stating that her insistence on following due process and established policies has been misunderstood.
She revealed that upon taking office, she found a system in disarray and has worked tirelessly to rebuild it.
Also, she shed light on why hundreds of staff hired by her predecessor have not yet been added to the payroll.
Furthermore, she announced the intentions of the institution to increase charges while baring her mind on the issue of education costs and the new Students’ Loan Act, among others.
