Spate Of Kidnappings In Cross River State: Outcry And Solution

INTRODUCTION

Kidnapping is a criminal offense that involves the unlawful taking and carrying away of a person by force or fraud or the unlawful seizure and detention of a person against their will.

It exists worldwide and has varying degrees of punishment including capital punishment. The act could be for ransom, political or other reasons.

Reports indicate that no fewer than 7 individuals have been kidnapped in Cross River State in 2023 alone.

The most recent victim, Prof. Ekanem Ephraim was abducted 22 days ago with her counterparts in the Nigerian Medical Association in the State withdrawing their services and embarking on protests demanding her release despite pleas by the State Government for them to be patient.

What exactly has led to the current trend of kidnappings for ransom in Cross River State?

Has there been a root cause analysis carried out?

Are the law enforcement agents doing enough?

Is the action of the medical workers the best tool to pressure state actors?

What is the best strategy going forward to stem this tide?

These and more formed the basis of this week’s ‘The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo’ with the topic: “Spate Of Kidnappings In Cross River State: Outcry And Solutions”.
