GADA Reduces Women’s Political Apathy, Seeks More Empowerment For Women, Girls

By Godwin Otang

A nonprofit making organization Gender And Development Action (GADA), has lessened female political apathy by 29.6 percent between last general elections to date.

This was made known to CrossRiverWatch in a recent report by the organization, via the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project Coordinator, Mrs Francisca Effiom in Calabar.

The report also indicates a significant increase in Cross River State women’s participation in politics within the period, including women from the University of Calabar (UNICAL), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), and the College of Health Technology in Calabar.

According to the report, while “690 (29.6%) women registered for their PVCs through the technical support provided by GADA during the continuous voter registration exercise by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2022, about 131 (9.8%) confirmed collection of their Permanent Voters Cards to vote in the elections.”

It is gathered that: “GADA’s mentees who have been trained for 4 quarters, to build their capacity and leadership skills, had 8 (26%) of them, vying for different political offices within the period.”

The organization that seeks gender equality is implementing the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria project, a project that is supported by ActionAid Nigeria and with funding from Global Affairs Canada.

Officials say the program seeks to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in Nigeria, with a focus on addressing the systemic barriers that prevent women and girls from fully participating in Nigerian society, particularly in leadership and decision-making.
