Suspected Brake Failure Leaves Four CUDA Staff Injured In Calabar

By Godwin Otang

Suspected brake failure has left four staff of the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) injured in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred along Marian Road by Mary Slessor Roundabout in the prime hours of the day, when the vehicle loaded with refuse failed brake and swerved to the side of the road; leaving the driver hospitalized.

Though there was no casualty, the accident littered refuse on the road.

A Senior Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer who craved anonymity blamed the incident on “the rickety nature of CUDA trucks and government Priority.”

The source added: “All CUDA Trucks are rickety. We see them every day, nowadays they usually work at night. But no pepper protective equipment, no vehicle maintenance, and the workers don’t even wear reflective jackets to prevent accidents.

“They usually park their trucks in a manner that obstructs traffic. The trucks are old and it also borders on the government’s priority for the CUDA.”

One of the victims Eteh Richard narrated thus: “We had brake failure as the driver tried to control the truck we crashed. I am feeling severe pain in my rib, it’s hurting me;  the driver has been rushed to the hospital as he fell off the truck when we crashed.”
