AFCON: Nigerians Are Proud Of You – Sports Minister Hails Super Eagles, Tobi Amusan

The Honorable Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Owan-Enoh has hailed the Super Eagles of Nigeria on their 2:0 victory over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

Nigeria reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON after Ademola Lookman scored twice to beat a disappointing Cameroon 2-0 in the last 16 in Abidjan.

The Atalanta forward opened the scoring nine minutes before the break after Victor Osimhen forced Oumar Gonzalez into a mistake and then teed up Lookman to fire past goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, who was preferred ahead of Manchester United goalkeeper – Andre Onana.

Lookman wrapped up the win in the 90th minute after one of the game’s best moves, volleying home Calvin Bassey’s cutback to spark huge celebrations among the three-time champions.

The Minister in a congratulatory message on his official X (former Twitter) handle applauded the victory and progress into the quarter-finals, saying “We all saw the work you put in and we are proud of you.”

He charged the Eagles not to end at the quarter-finals but push ahead to bring the trophy home.

“Onto the quarter finals Super Eagles!!! Congratulations, we all saw the work you put in and we are proud of you, thank you. Let’s do it again.”

The Super Eagles will meet Angola, who impressed in a 3-0 win over Namibia earlier on Saturday, in the last eight on Friday, also in the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.

Similarly, the Minister in the vein congratulated Tobi Amusan.

setting the African women’s indoor record in 60-meter hurdles at the Astana Indoor Meet, Kazakhstan.

Amusan set a new record of 7.77secs to set a new African record, thus erasing Glory Alozie’s 7.82secs established in 1999.

“You’ve shown us all what true athleticism looks like. We’re so proud of your amazing accomplishment. Your sports achievement is a testament to your hard work and commitment. Congratulations Superstar; congratulations again,” he expressed.
