Suspected hemorrhagic fever has reportedly broken out in Cross River community of Ndebeji, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the State.
The Commissioner for Health Dr. Egbe Ayuk stated this while on a visit to the Community, where he said the outbreak has led to a patient losing some quantity of blood in a newly commissioned primary health care center in the community.
“I have visited the health facility and have directed the State Epidemiologist and her team to work with the LGA teams to collect samples from the suspected case for diagnosis, provide palliative case management, and institutionalize adequate infection prevention and control in the facility.”
He charged the team to entrench risk communication in the community for public interest, as the fever is primarily transmitted from animals (mainly rats) and other insects that are the primary hosts of the viruses.
The Commissioner said they can be transmitted through inhaling or coming in contact with infected products from animals as well as contact with humans infected with the virus.
Dr. Egbe Ayuk said the virus could be prevented by line listing and collection of samples from all contacts of the index case, personal and environmental cleanliness, infection prevention and control in the health facilities, avoiding rodents, and putting on personal protective wear should anyone come close to livestock, zoos among other animals.
