Foundation To Train UNICAL Students On Leadership

By Able Winnard

Guru African Student Leadership Academy (GASLA), an initiative of the Guru Foundation with the aim of providing adequate professional training for students who occupy leadership positions in tertiary institutions in Africa has collaborated with the Student Union leaders of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), for a leadership advancement program.

GASLA embarked on a Student Union Leadership Advancement Program (SULAP) train that will last for a week. It is to help student leaders to advance in leadership performance while in office.

The Founder of the Guru African Leadership Academy Mr. Oyo Effiom said leadership plays a vital role in what happens around and is driven by leadership.

Effiom posited that “a good place to begin leadership is on campus, which is why we are quick to talk down on leadership in this part of the world and yet do very little to develop leaders.

“Soldiers are trained to shoot, software engineers are trained to code, instrumentalists are trained to play but it’s only leaders at this formative stage that are expected to perform magic when they take up leadership positions.

“In 2020, our survey showed that about 70 percent of young persons occupying leadership positions on campus have never been trained.

“That’s why I’ve decided to set up GASLA to provide leadership training for student leaders across Africa”.
