Cross River Government To Create Enabling Environment, Power, Soft Loans For Business Operators

By Godwin Otang

The Government of Cross River State, says modalities are in place to create an enabling environment, power, and soft loans to businesses in the State.

The Ministry of Commerce disclosed it has met with the Calabar and Ikom Chambers of Commerce and over 30 traders associations in an attempt to resolve taxation issues plus other challenges faced by the business community in the State.

The Ministry made this known through its Commissioner Dr. Abigail Duke Orok while speaking on civic engagement series organized by the Cross River Movement (TCRM) held via Zoom and anchored by Bassey Iso, the Founder.

The Commerce Commissioner assured the business community of the government’s commitment to return a steady power supply for businesses, soft loans, and grants in the State; appealing to stakeholders for patience for the next six months for results.

She said the government knows the challenges businesses face and efforts are in gear to ameliorate them.

Dr. Abigail averred that the stakeholders’ engagements have helped the government to decide on cutting down daily taxation from N1800 to N300 Naira per day at the Ika Ika Oqua (Marian) market, Calabar.

While giving six months for Cross Riverians to start enjoying a steady power supply, she added: “Within the past month and now, the Cross River State government has given grants via the Ng Cares Programs to about 500 businesses in the State.”

On his part, the President of Calabar Chambers of Commerce David Etim, said there have been improvements in commercial activities; giving credit to the mutual relationship that exists between Chambers of Commerce and the Ministry.

He, however, lamented the high level of taxation on businesses as it has been one of the major challenges.

Idim John-Collins Ude, Director at the Canaan Global Business School, gave some tips to business operators on how to thrive and grow the business environment.
