In an attempt to achieve sustainable economic growth and development in Cross River State, the government of Governor Bassey Otu has launched an exhaustive state development plan (SDP) from 2024 to 2033.
During the launching in Calabar the State capital, Governor Bassey Otu said the SDP is targeted to transform into an inclusive, thriving and sustainable economy by 2033.
“The high incidence of poverty, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits has hindered our development efforts in the past.”
The Governor represented by his Deputy, Peter Odey noted that the plan is a testament to its administration’s resolve to address the issues and provide a roadmap for sustainable development.
Stakeholders and development partners in attendance were informed by the Governor that the SDP is in line with national and international frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Human Capital Development Vision 2030, and the National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and It seeks to advance environmental sustainability, strengthen economic circumstances, and strengthen governance.
The State Planning Commission Vice Chairman and CEO, Dr. Bong Duke, stressed the importance of accountability, openness, and efficient public service delivery in the plan.
“This plan is geared towards reinforcing social protection, improving the welfare of vulnerable persons, and ensuring that marginalized groups enjoy basic quality services,” Duke stated.
The launch comes after intensive discussions and cooperation with important development partners, such as UNICEF, WHO, and UNHCR.
Juliet Chiluwe, the UNICEF Chief Field Officer for Enugu, lauded the inclusive approach of the strategy in her goodwill message. “We are convinced that this plan will set Cross River State on the path to achieving its vision of a thriving and sustainable economy,” she said, assuring that “UNICEF is committed to supporting the state in achieving the strategic goals of the SDP.”
The recently appointed Permanent Secretary and Director of the SPC, Kingsly Ndem Eyibio, gave a summary of the SDP, including its implementation plans and road map. In order to promote growth at the grassroots level, he underlined the significance of incorporating market features, mobilizing resources, and encouraging attitudinal changes.
The occasion also recognized the contributions made by the Technical Working Group from several MDAs and the SPC personnel in organizing the creation of the plan. For the benefit of everyone, the Cross River State Government urged residents, investors, development partners, and civil society organizations to support the SDP’s successful implementation.
