The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Monday, September 16th, 2024, as a public holiday to celebrate Eid-al-Mawlid, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government, congratulating Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
Tunji-Ojo encouraged Muslims to embrace the values of patience, sacrifice, and resilience, which are exemplified by the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. He also urged them to use the opportunity to pray for lasting peace and a more prosperous and equal society.
Eid-ul-Mawlid is a significant celebration in the Islamic calendar, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. It is observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabi’ al-Awwal, and is a time for Muslims to come together and reflect on the teachings of the Prophet.
The public holiday will allow Muslims in Nigeria to observe the celebration with their families and communities, and to participate in traditional activities such as prayers, processions, and charity work.
The government’s announcement has been welcomed by Muslim leaders and communities across Nigeria, who have expressed gratitudes for the recognition of the important religious celebration.
