A newborn baby was earlier on Monday found lifeless in a gutter at Ekpo Abasi junction by Umo Edem Street, Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Eyewitnesses said the baby was found wrapped in its placenta and placed in a black leather bag. A passerby discovered the gruesome scene and raised an alarm.
“It was a horrific sight,” said Joy Augustine. “The baby was still in a pool of blood, and it was clear that it had been thrown away like trash.”
“This is a tragic and disturbing incident,” said a team of Dagon Squad that arrived at the scene.
“I was on my way to get something at a nearby shop when I saw the baby’s body in the gutter,” said Mrs. Effiom, a resident of Ekpo Abasi. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was a newborn baby, probably not more than a day old.”
The incident has left many in the community shocked and saddened, with calls for greater awareness and support for young mothers and families in need.
“This is a wake-up call for all of us. “We need to come together as a community to support each other and ensure that no mother feels like they have no option but to abandon their child.”
