The member representing Yakurr 2 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mercy Akpama has led female legislators outreach, promoting greater women participation in politics.
The Female Legislators Outreach exercise organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UN-WOMEN and the Government of Canada, was held a few days ago.
The event focused on encouraging greater participation of women in politics and broader societal activities, emphasizing the critical role women play in community and national development.
Speakers of the event highlighted the importance of empowering women to take more active roles in governance, stressing how their increased political involvement can drive local community transformation and shape a brighter national future.
Hon. Akpama in her address, shared her inspiring journey since taking office as the representative of Yakurr 2 State Constituency, outlining her achievements over her first year, including programs centered on education, social welfare, and economic empowerment while also revealing several upcoming initiatives aimed at benefiting communities across Cross River State, not just her immediate community of Nko.
The event also provided a platform for community leaders and citizens to voice their concerns and hopes for the future of Nko and the broader state, even as youths and women poured out their hearts in gratitude to the Honorable for her continuous efforts. They, however, requested additional support from the educational sector to illuminate their community in the education arena.
Hon. Akpama assured the attendees of her commitment to the development of Nko and other communities in her constituency. She pledged to continue advocating for projects that improve education, infrastructure, and economic opportunities while collaborating with local and national stakeholders to fulfill her promises.
According to the organizers, the event underscored the need for increased female representation in politics and fostered direct engagement between the government and the people, reinforcing Hon. Akpama’s dedication to inclusive, people-centered governance.
The outreach was graced by dignitaries from all spheres of life.
