Press Freedom: AJFIAJ To Host ‘Journalism And Crossing The Cyber Crimes Hurdle’ Symposium, Governor Otu To Grace It

By Sylvia Akpan

The Agba Jalingo Foundation for Investigative and Accountability Journalism (AJFIAJ) is set to host a one-day symposium on “Journalism and Crossing The Cyber Crimes Hurdle” in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.

The event slated for January 2nd, 2025 will marry the birth date of CrossRiverWatch Publisher, Citizen Agba Jalingo as he will clock 48 years. The symposium addresses the growing concerns of cybercrime law prosecutions against journalists and bloggers in Nigeria.

Just as a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), states that at least 29 Nigerian journalists have faced prosecution under the cybercrimes law since its enactment in 2015, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has expressed concerns.

Governor Otu emphasized the training, competence, and emotional intelligence of online bloggers in the state and has graciously accepted to be the special guest of honor at the symposium.

The one-day symposium is geared towards addressing the harassment and prosecution of journalists and bloggers, promoting best practices for responsible reporting and online publishing, and fostering professionalism among online publishers.

Industry professionals and legal experts conversant with cybercrime law issues will share their expertise.

While Governor Bassey Otu will feature as a Special Guest of Honor, renowned journalists, media experts, and cybercrime law specialists are expected to grace the occasion.
