Cross River Government Establish Bodies To Tackle Climate Change

In a move aimed at strengthening its commitment to addressing Climate Change and the Green Economy Commission law of Cross River State, the Government of Cross River State, has constituted two statutory bodies – the state council on climate change and the state Green Economy Commission.

A press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, Mr.Gill Nsa on Tuesday December 3rd, 2024, noted that the establishment of the bodies are in line with the Climate Change and Green Economy Commission Law of Cross River State.

The law aims to provide a framework for the state’s response to climate change, as well as promote green economic growth.

The release reads “His Excellency Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the constitution of two statutory bodies, namely the State Council on Climate Change and the State Green Economy Commission.

“These two bodies are statutory and are expected to provide strategic direction, ensure policy implementation, and coordinate intersectoral collaborations to achieve the State climate change goals and green economic aspirations, among other responsibilities.

“The statutory heads and members of the Council and the Commission are as follows: State Climate Change Council has Governor Bassey Otu as Chairman, Deputy Governor Peter Odey as Vice Chairman, Commissioner for Environment – Member, Chairman Green Economy Commission – Member, Emmanuel Etim – Member, Adam Nkanor – Member, Veronica N. Jakarasi – Member, Joseph Onoja – Member.

“Also, Dr. Mrs. Edu Effiom as Director General of the Council. Under the Cross River State Green Economy Commission, Oden Ewa (Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations) is the Officer Chairman/Chief Executive, Xavier Eyamba – Member, Engr. Peter Ohiero – Member, Justin Andoh Eleshi – Member, Ekpor Erekoro – Member, Austin Eremi – Member, Stephen Eguba Ekwok – Member, Barr. William Itorok – Member, Edwin Usang – Secretary of the Commission.”

The two bodies are to strengthen collaborations with development partners and stakeholders on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and green economic growth. Their functions are to commence immediately.
