FG Alert Hospitals On New COVID-19 Variant, Calls For Vigilance

By Sylvia Akpan

The Federal Ministry of Health has alerted hospitals across the country to be on high alert following the detection of a new XEC COVID-19 variant.

In a letter to the Chairman, Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, the Ministry disclosed that the new variant has been reported in Australia and has spread to 29 countries globally.

The letter, signed by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of Teaching Hospital Division, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, stated that the XEC variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.

The Ministry urged hospitals to activate their alert systems and be vigilant for patients with COVID-like symptoms.

It has also requested collaboration with stakeholders to share critical data and implement enhanced monitoring protocols.

The Federal Ministry emphasized the importance of timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, to ensure effective response strategies.
