In an extending hands of fellowship and in the spirit of the season – love irrrespective of status, class and among others, Human Rights defender, Citizen Agba Jalingo has garnered support from spirited individuals to feed and cater for hundreds of inmates in Afokang prison, Calabar, Cross River State.

As his annual exercise to celebrate with inmates of the Afokang prison through sports, he sought the support from well-meaning Nigerians to also feed, provide provisions and toiletries for the Inmates

The outreach is scheduled for Friday, December 20th, 2024.

At the time of filing this report, donations have racked up to two million, one hundred and forty-nine thousand, five hundred (2,149,500) Naira, with more expected.

Jalingo who has kept the audience in the know on the proposed event, further gives a breakdown as thus: “Due to demands from inmates and serving staff at the Medium Security Custodial Center, Calabar (Afokang Prisons) about the need to ensure your donations gets to every inmate, we decided against taking raw food there tomorrow. It may be diverted.

“We decided to take cooked food with some toiletries in individual packs to be handed to inmates personally by hand in our presence.

“Afokang prison was built for 400 inmates but now holds between 600 to 800 inmates during peak periods like this.

“The second problem we had was, after contacting several food vendors in Calabar, the least cost for a plate of food we got was 3k. And if you multiply 3k by an average of 700 inmates, that is 2.1million Naira. So far, we have gathered NGN2,149,500 from your generosity.

“If we go that route, all the inmates will get a plate of food but without any other thing else.

Apart from food, the sanitary conditions in the cells, where I once lived, are very bad. We need to add some toiletries and detergents to every pack of food.

“Therefore, we thought about another route. We have decided to hire people to cook the food in a private volunteer home to reduce cost and see how some cash can be saved to buy other things to add to the pack of food. The goal is to ensure that every inmate gets, at least a plate of food and maybe a sachet toothpaste and maybe more, depending on what is available.

“Those who took responsibility are already at work against tomorrow 10:00 AM. Venue will be announced.

“The prison annual end of year sports competition is also ongoing and the final for the football cup in jail is tomorrow Friday. We need to buy some footballs and some playing shoes for a few star players.

“The account of your donations will be given to the latter, here, after all the activities.

“Once again, I am very grateful for your contributions and your continued support and confidence in yours sincerely. I won’t disappoint you deliberately at any time.

“The window of support isn’t shut yet. If you still want to support, kindly pay into: 8134585365, Palmpay, Abegim Jonathan Ugbal

“Remember to send the transaction receipt for update. You may want to also remain anonymous but your donation will be acknowledged and announced as ‘anonymous.’ Thank you all,” he explained

Note: further donations have been made and has risen from two million, one hundred and forty-nine thousand, five hundred (2,149,500) to two million, seven hundred and twenty-five thousand (2,725,000) Naira, as of Friday 20th December, 2024 at 8:08AM.

According to Citizen Agba Jalingo, “the movement to the prison is this morning 10:AM and take off point is Total fueling station by Ekpo Abasi.”
