A suspected Sleeping sickness – trypanosomiasis has been detected in Ebom Community, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk and the Director of Public Health, Dr. Goddy Effah confirmed this during a town hall meeting held in Calabar on Tuesday, December 10th, 2024.
The duo disclosed that several patients have been admitted for care at the Primary Healthcare Center in Ebom and the General Hospital in Ugep.
The disease is caused by the trypanosoma parasite, transmitted through the bite of the tsetse fly, commonly found near lakes and farmlands. Symptoms include abnormal sleeping patterns, fever, muscle pain, and weakness. If untreated, it can be fatal.
Ebom Community members are advised to wear long sleeves and take precautions against insect bites.
Health officials urge the public to report any unusual symptoms, such as drowsiness or fever, to healthcare facilities.
Dr. Goddy Effah, Director of Public Health, and Christy Iwara, Director of Primary Healthcare in Abi LGA, who attended the meeting, emphasized the need for rapid response.
Dr. Henry Ayuk, Health Commissioner, stressed the importance of vigilance and immediate medical attention in combating the outbreak.
