Nigerian journalist and activist, Citizen Agba Jalingo says he will appeal the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory which awarded Mrs. Elizabeth Alami Ayade, NGN10 million in “general damages,” in a libel and defamation suit.
The Court, sitting in Apo, and presided over by Justice Abubakar Shani Baba also ordered that Citizen Jalingo is expected to publish an apology on Guardian and Vanguard newspapers within 14 days of the order and is “perpetually restrained” from publishing further damaging materials against Mrs. Ayade.
Citizen Jalingo and three others were listed as defendants in suit number FCT/HC/CV/3303/2022. Mrs. Ayade had asked for the publication of a retraction, an apology and NGN500 million in damages over a Facebook publication made in 2022.
Recall that the Federal High Court had discharged and acquitted Citizen Jalingo over the same issue in a criminal suit last year.
Counsel to Jalingo, F. Baba Isa Esq, commended the court and said he will apply for the judgment, study it and advice his client accordingly.
