Hundreds of students have commenced refresher classes for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Unified Tertiary Matriculation Education, UTME and Senior School Certificate Examination classes across two local government areas in southern Cross River State.
Sponsored by the Works and Infrastructure Commissioner, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, the classes aim to prepare candidates who hail from Akamkpa Local Government Area for the examinations as it complement what they learn in school in a bid to better prepare them.
The classes hold at three different venues, with Government Secondary School, Ediba in Calabar Municipal hosting most of the candidates. This, according to Joseph-Kelvin Enyam, who is the Special Assistant on Student Affairs to Governor Bassey Otu, is due to the discovery that most of the students reside in Calabar.
Enyam who commended the Commissioner for his benevolence explained that the “intensive tutorials hold three days a week – Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and will continue until the exams are concluded.” He continued; “This project also aims to ensure employment to teachers in the short term, it would also give room for experience gathering and proper positioning whereby reducing restiveness of any kind.”
He disclosed that besides the Government Secondary School Ediba, Calabar, the centers in Akamkpa are Community Secondary Grammar School in Oban as well as Saint John Primary School in Akamkpa town. A fourth center facilitated by his office is in Okuku, Yala Local Government Area.
Mr. Enyam enjoined parents and guardians of beneficiaries of the scheme, as well as others who have registered for the JAMB UTME and other examinations, to take advantage of the tutorials to better equip them.

For Mr. Edet, having a tough time getting an education while growing up is his motivation to help the younger generation. He told CrossRiverWatch that he overcame several financial challenges to rise to the height he is today, and emphasized the importance of education in excelling despite tough backgrounds.
While addressing beneficiaries during the flag off of the registration and tutorials, he urged the students to be focused and not be distracted. “You too can be a governor. You too can be a president. You too can be a commissioner like I am standing here. But you need to take the right steps now. Don’t let your background limit you,” Mr. Edet said.
