It is all excitement in Cross River State North Senatorial district, as traditional rulers’ monthly salaries/stipends have been augmented.
The augmentation is a kind gesture of one of their sons, High Chief Higgins Peters. He had, on 6 September 2025, during the Bekwarra New Yam festival and his chieftaincy title promised to augment the monthly salaries of the paramount rulers and the entire clan heads of the five local governments in the senatoria district. Ten thousand (10,000) Naira for clan heads and twenty thousand (20,000) Naira for paramount rulers across the five local governments for life.
In fulfilling the promise, the benefactor acknowledged the important role of royal fathers and said the idea is to encourage their efforts and spur them to do more.
The goodwill kicked off on the 22nd of November 2025, as the beneficiaries said he has paid three months in advance to over one hundred and twenty (120) clan heads and five (5) paramount rulers for November, December, and January.
One of the elated paramount rulers, who, though, pleaded to be anonymous, said he has been on the traditional stool for over two decades. Yet, they have not seen or heard anyone who has looked into their welfare.
According to the traditional rulers, Chief Higgins’ kindness is a promise made and promise kept. They called on all and sundry to imitate his footsteps, describing him as the Emoma and “Akpa Owo” of Yala and the “Uni Ukpere” (destiny helper) of Bekwara Local Government and the Natural Leader of the North.
