The Cross River State House of Assembly has upheld the resignation of the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Hon. Theresa Akwaji Ushie, thereby vacating its earlier resolution on her removal from office, and ordered the immediate swearing-in of the Vice Chairman, Hon. Egbung Odama, as the substantive Chairman of the council.
The decision followed the formal presentation and consideration of a resignation letter dated December 8, 2025, addressed to the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Otu.
In the letter, Hon. Ushie tendered her resignation as Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, stating that the decision was reached after careful reflection and consultations with family and key stakeholders, and in what she described as the best interest of the council and the people of Bekwarra.

In its resolution, the Assembly held that the voluntary resignation of the chairman superseded the earlier legislative action on her removal, making it necessary to set aside that decision. The lawmakers stressed that the step was taken in line with due process and the need to ensure stability and continuity in local government administration.

Accordingly, the House directed that Hon. Egbung Odama be sworn in without delay as the substantive Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, in line with the relevant provisions of the law.

The Assembly expressed confidence that the transition would guarantee uninterrupted governance and effective service delivery at the grassroots.
